Subject: Winter War and Continuation War

How do you do? My name is Miles and I study European war history in the University of Manchester.
I am very well aware of the great war history of your country and would like to see with my own eyes the war sites of your Winter War and Continuation War. I have been blessed with possibility to visit your country next summer in July.
Would you be so kind and supply me with an inclusive list of the war sites worth visit in the province of Eastern Finland?
In addition, would you please give me a short description of those?

Yours, Miles

Re:
Dear Miles,

we are pleased to know that you find Finnish history interesting. We are very happy that you have chosen Finland to be your holiday destination. Therefore we feel obliged to provide you with the information of some interesting places concerning Winter War and Continuation War.

As a researcher, you may find interesting our Winter War museums. First one is the museum in the city of Kuhmo (http://www.kuhmo.fi/index.asp?language=1) and the second the museum in the city of Suomussalmi (http://www.suomussalmi.fi/en/tourist/attractions/war_history_in_suomussalmi/winter_war_exhibition_raatteen_portti). Moreover, in Suomussalmi you can find the monument that memorizes the battle of Suomussalmi and the fallen soldiers, both Finnish and Soviet.

We could also recommend you to go all the way through the Winter War battles. Starting with Summa, through Ilomantsi, Taipaleenjoki, Lieksa, already mentioned Suomussalmi, Alassalmi, Mäntyvaara to Salla. The path through the battles of Winter War will lead you along the eastern border of Finland.

However we know that you are going to visit the Eastern site of Finland, we also recommend you to visit a museum of Winter and Continuation War in Säkylä (http://www.sakylantalvijajatkosotamuseo.fi/default2.asp?active_page_id=185).
Going from the museum in Säkylä towards Vaasa you can visit the city of Isokyrö. There you can find an amazing monument of the War.

There are, of course, more monuments memorizing the Continuation War the are located in the east. You can find them e.g. in the city of Hirvasvaara (Kiviaapa - monument for the victims of the patisans attack), the city of Posio (monument of the Posion citizens that marched away for the Continuation War).

A lot of other Continuation War monuments are on the western side of Finland. If you would be, anyway, interested in sightseeing them as well, do not hesitate to ask us about it, so we will provide you with detail information.

We hope that you will find our tips useful.

Greetings,
